Insurance is a contract transferring risk from yourself to an insurance company. If a bad event happens to you,
the insurance company makes a payment based on the benefits and terms of the agreement.
Most people protect against the risk of being sick with a health insurance policy, you protect your family by
purchasing a Life insurance policy that pays a death benefit. Your car and home are protected from the risk
of theft, fire or damage by purchasing home and auto policies.
An important part of a complete insurance plan is protecting against the risk of loosing your ability to earn an
income. Disability insurance protects your income either for a short amount of time (Short Term Disability) or
a longer period (Long Term Disability). Short and Long Term Disability plans protect your income and help
you maintain your lifestyle while unable to work and collect a paycheck.
Disability plans typically pay 60% of pre-disability earnings. The duration of payment varies as does the
elimination period (amount of time you are disabled before the policy begins to pay). By reviewing your
needs with a trained consultant, you should be able to purchase a disability plan that adequately protects your
income.
Use the Disability Calculator to determine how much risk you could afford to retain and how much protection
you should consider.
